Yet the traveler has always been an arbiter of difference. This helps to explain the special status of travel in the eighteenth century, for it was the traveler who held the ability to exercise a special set of judgments that tested and exposed the limits of the host’s sociability. Travelers reported, for example, whether they were turned away, like Boswell at the Mannheim court, or welcomed and fittingly hosted; they determined whether the society was trade friendly like Tonga, which became known as the ‘‘Friendly Islands,’’ or closed and protectionist like late eighteenth-century China, which acquired a correspondingly negative reputation.

Cultivating a reputation for travel was, in other words, a way of stoking the home fires in response to domes28 | enlightenment orpheus tic and international pressures. This also explains the motivations of those, like the Germans, whose literal claim on travel and its attendant capital was more tenuous. Transnationalizing the notion of symbolic capital thus demonstrates the problems with the German particularity argument—at least vis-a`-vis the late eighteenth century. German travel discourse would become highly patriotic, even belligerent, and it would feed nationalist and colonialist projects during the Wilhelmine and Weimar periods.
